Looking Back at the History of The DAPSie Awards!

It’s that time of year again. The DAPSie Awards, or more commonly known as The DAPSies, will soon be back on GEEKS CORNER! As we draw closer to this annual event, it seems only fitting to look back at where it started. Basically, Mr. DAPs and Johnny 5 decided most awards shows were too boring and not enough fun. Because of this, they decided to create a shorter one that would be lots off fun! Thus, The DAPSies were born!

Each year, The DAPSies include five categories. This includes:

  • Movies
  • YouTube
  • People
  • Geek
  • The Corner

The first episode of The DAPSies was broadcast on March 1, 2012. With the five categories with each category having five awards, this is the perfect awards show for GEEKS CORNER. The first episode was only 12:25 minutes long to beat the length of the first Oscars Awards, which was 15:00 minutes. In fact, the awards themselves were only about 8 minutes long! It was said during the awards show that this was the first year of what would be an annual presentation of The DAPSies. Mr. DAPs and Johnny 5 really had no clue though as the show really was week to week and a year was a very long way off! Little did they know…

A year later, the GEEKS found themselves returning for another awards show of The DAPSies. This year, the goal was to have the award show finish within 8 minutes. This year, the audience in the “theater” absolutely loved most of the awards. The audio for the show also increased dramatically. Once again there were five categories with five awards each.

The third year of The DAPSie Awards found the geeks trying to up their game. This year, the goal was to get through 25 awards in 5 minutes. This year the show was pre-recorded again and saw the return of Guy on a Buffalo and J.J. Abrams as award recipients. This year was a race to the finish as the GEEKS passed out award after award…. and even hit on some politics!? What was your favorite award of this season?

The 2015 DAPSies found Hayley joining Mr. DAPs and Johnny 5 for this very special awards show. This year, The DAPSie Awards were completely revamped. They also were LIVE for the first time! However, the core values of it continued. There are no long music numbers. There are no overly long speeches. There are still 25 awards handed out by Hayley, Mr. DAPs, and Johnny 5 over the course of a half hour… which makes it still pretty much the shortest awards show out there! Murray also made a special guest experience! This year’s show was a lot of fun and great memories were made!

The fifth year of The DAPsie Awards saw more changes. Once again, the show was live and had all of the excitement that goes with that. This year, Mr. DAPs was joined by Cameron Jackson and Melanie. Although there were new people, there was still five categories with five awards in each category. The audience also was a part of this year’s show. This year, Mr. DAPs, Cameron, and Melanie also performed a music number… that is unforgettable… for better or worse. Don’t Stop the Geeking!

Year six of The DAPsies the GEEKS realized that really, it’s “the only award show that matters” so might as well make it that. This year, Mr. DAPs was joined by Cameron Jackson, Caitie Bear, and of course Murray the Bellhop. Fun was had by all. Once again, the show was broadcast live. This year, there is even more music. First off, Murray sang a song that was dedicated to “all the kids who had their presents burned.” With this song, the Christmas Dragon song debuted on the awards show. Since then, this song has become LEGEN-DARY on GEEKS CORNER! A second song wraps up the show after the 25 awards were given. Perhaps it is the shortest song ever…

Music started things off for the seventh year of The DAPsies. Music from Les Miserables…. sort of, started things off… as Cameron sang and Mr. DAPs accompanied him on a melodica and Caitie played the tambourine. Once again the show was broadcast live. Once again, there were 25 awards given out. This year, music again returned to the show… AND Adam made his first appearance on The DAPsies! This also marked the first year a physical DAPsie award was shown during the show!

The eighth year of The DAPsies had Mr. DAPs, Cameron, and Caitie Bear again hosting the awards show. This year, a new segment was added to The DAPsies. There are “short films” added this year… or perhaps a short film festival? Once again, Guy on a Buffalo returned to the awards show. This year went all over the place throughout the show and was the first year in front of a brick wall!

2020 marked the 9th year of The DAPsie Awards. This year was as formal as ever, except for Cameron who went country! Watch the episode to see why. This year saw the return of the “film festival” which led to the introduction of the hit song “Funky Duck.” Cameron also introduced the hit geek song “Not a Safe Place!” Once again, there were 25 awards over the course of working through five categories during the awards show.

Now it is February 2021. A lot has changed in the last year. It is has been a difficult year, a weird year, an (dare I say it?) unprecedented year! Despite ALL of that, the GEEKS will be back on February 23, 2021 for The DAPsies. If you have anyone or anything you’d like to nominate in the five categories, let us know in the comments below or on Twitter with the hashtag #geekscorner!

We’ll see you in the corner!
